Federal law, Title 5 U.S.C. § 6103, establishes the following legal holidays for Federal employees.
- When a holiday falls on a Saturday, the holiday is usually observed on the Friday immediately before.
- When a holiday falls on a Sunday, the holiday is usually observed on the Monday immediately following.
- Though other names may be used for holidays, such as Presidents’ Day rather than Washington’s Birthday, the holiday names designated in the law are used to specify legal holidays for Federal employees.
